Bit of Rain, Master Pilot Award, Quarter Century Club and More!

Another week has flown by!  We had a bit of rain, about 1.75 inch depending where you are in Lakeway.  Here's a picture of one of the storms that moved through Thursday - featured on KVUE weather at 10 p.m.  Beautiful cloud formation with the sun glowing through.  Here's a link to more pictures.  Looks like we are dry until next week.  Here is a link to the weather station at Live Oak 15th Tee is online to check on the current conditions.

Lakeway Airpark is holding its annual meeting on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Activity center - I mention this because Mayor Emeritus Charles Edwards will be honored by the FAA with a Master Pilot Award.  Join us to honor Mayor Edwards!

Today I was once again honored to attend the 20th anniversary of the Quarter Century Club.  Nancy and I have been here since 1988 and were invited to the club 6 years ago.  It's always a wonderful experience visiting with the residents that are the reason Lakeway is the exceptional city it is today.  Peggy Point is the volunteer that keeps this group going, thank you Peggy!  Another example of the volunteer spirit that makes Lakeway great.  A short presentation on the 1st 10 years was given and BBQ from It's all good was served for lunch.  If you get a chance, go by the Heritage Center and take a look at the pictures taken to memorialize our history.  Maybe some of our current elected officials should study the history and think hard about changing the rules that have kept this a great place to live for over 50 years.

Since I'm on history, I'll say a little about the 75th anniversary of D Day that we observed this week on June 6.  Many of the folks at the Quarter Century Club gathering also served their country in the military - that is really the group that formed our city and the structure that has kept our city in good stead for over 30 years.  Both my mother and father served in WWII and my dad in Korea also.  These people were in fact part of the greatest generation - one of my regrets is I didn't get my parents to tell me more of the time they spent serving the country - they didn't really want to talk about it, it was just a job they did.

Thanks to all those that served and kept our country free and let us never forget their sacrifices.  Thank your neighbors that served and sacrificed for our freedom!

ZAPCO met in regular session on Wednesday.  Here is a link to the agenda.  Items 5, 6 and 7 went fairly quickly and were approved unanimously.  There was a lot of discussion on 8 & 9, these had to do with variances requested by Travis County for the Bee Creek Sports Complex.  Several folks living in Spicewood and the county had concerns about both the cut and fill locations and the lighting.  New technology is being used for lighting that should make this neighbor friendly.  Both items passed.

Suds Car Wash got approval for a new monument sign on 620 - this is the Arbor Car Wash that was sold.  The sign approved was slightly modified from the original request.  They also got approval for a wall sign.

The monument sign requested on item 12 was denied - commissioners felt it was too far out of line with ordinances - vote was 6-1 with Commissioner Harris in decent.

There was a lengthy conversation about the Lakeway Comprehensive Plan efforts.

There was a town hall on the MUD property development on Lohmans - here is a link to the video - hint, if you turn up the sound all the way you can almost hear the audio.  It was fairly well attended, about 200 (not the 300 the paper reported).  Better than the Comprehensive Plan Town Hall that about 70 folks attended.

The developer laid out two different proposals, one with standard zoning that would have a two lane road that feeds the community and the other with a little more density that would sport a little more park land and a 4 lane divided road to the Stratus property line.  My choice would be the second with the 4 lane road - if the other option is picked, the city will foot the bill for the road (more tax dollars) and it will take a lot longer.

That's about it for today - there's a Women's Triathlon this Sunday at the City Park - starts at 7 a.m. (UGH).  I'm going to try to get some pictures.

I hope everyone has a GREAT weekend - get out and enjoy the weather - it's going to be hot real soon!  If you want some pictures of your home or a business, drop me an email and Sky Pictures will make it happen.

If you would like to be added to my email list, send a note to lakeway@bain.us and I'll get you added - thanks for all the support for the blog!
