NNO, ZAPCO, TxDOT and More!

Another week has come and gone, lets see what went on in the city.

National Night Out (NNO) was held Tuesday evening!  The weather was a little bit of an issue but no one really complained about the rain - I'm always happy with a little rain.  This year we had police officers and Lakeway Citizens Police Academy Alumni present at all locations that requested visits.  The Chief and I visited about a dozen locations, many of which had 20-30 folks present - some more!  Thanks to all for your participation and your support of our police.  We have a safe community because of their dedication and efforts.

Wednesday Flintrock Falls held their NNO celebration at the Flintrock Clubhouse - I'm guessing 80-100 attended.  There were some great questions about not only the police but the city in general.  I appreciate the opportunity to visit with residents and talk about our community.

ZAPCO met in regular session Wednesday evening.  Here is that agenda.  There were 4 STR's (Short Term Rentals) on the agenda - 1 renewal and 3 new ones.  All were approved with comments only on one new one.  Some residents were trying to form a POA to restrict STR's and if they do that entity can work to enforce restrictions at that time.  This brings us the the maximum STR's allowed - there should only be renewals from this point unless someone drops their permit.

The rest of the items were approved or recommended to council for the next meeting.

HIghlands Blvd was texture milled from west of the bridge to east of Duffy Lane.  This has been done to improve traction during rain events.  We have had multiple incidents and reports and hope this will improve the situation.

Phase 1 of the Lakeway Blvd. irrigation and grass install is nearing completion.  Although the rain caused some issues with erosion the contractor has recovered and has been testing the new sprinklers.  They still have a bit of work to do but are moving very quickly.

You might have noticed the "Old Lakeway" signs that are being installed on designated neighborhoods.  Here's a link to the website for more information - check it out.

CBC will meet in regular session next week - here is their agenda.

I'm told by TxDOT that the signal lights on Dave Dr. and 620 will go on flash Monday and will be in service by the end of the week.  I'm told they will be timed with Lakeway Blvd. so they will work together.  The right turn sign in the photo will be repaired on Tuesday - double click to enlarge the picture.

BaylorScott&White will have a ribbon cutting on their new clinic on November 1st at noon.  Here is a link to more info - come join us!  They are also doing a workshop at the hospital October 27 from 11-1.  It will be "Stop The Bleed" in the form of a hands on class.  Refreshments will be provided.

BS&W is also promoting a breast cancer awareness by hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness Panel Discussion on Thursday, October 19 at 6:00 p.m.  They are also providing an Education Series - the next presentation is "Skin Cancer: Warning Signs and Prevention" to be held Thursday, October 26 at 6 p.m.

The "Arts Committee" has been busy this year.  Here is a link to their annual report!

From the Chief:
LPD Officers conducted 179 traffic stops, responded to 17 alarm calls, answered 14 animal calls, handled 12 collisions, answered 18 suspicious circumstances calls and handled 106 other types of calls for service for a total of 346.

Routine traffic stops resulted in the following charges, driving while intoxicated X 1, and an open container violation X 1.

Officers responded to a disturbance call at a Fantail Loop address. Upon arrival officers met with a subject sitting outside the residence. It was learned that a verbal argument had ensued between the two parties who lived at the residence. No charges were filed in this case. The male subject did have active arrest warrants out of Williamson County and was arrest for those warrants.

Officers responded to a Lakeway Drive Hotel in reference to a disturbance. It was learned by officers that a family had been involved in a disturbance. The mother and father had been assaulted by their adult son. After assaulting his parents, the son had fled the room and was located a short time later by responding officers in the area. The son was arrested and charged with assault family violence and injury to the elderly. He was transported to the Travis County Jail.

Travis County Sheriff’s Deputies were investigating a disturbance off of Bee Creek Rd. After learning that a suspect had fled the scene TCSO asked for our assistance in attempting to locate the suspect. A short time later a vehicle matching the description given, was located and stopped by Lakeway Officers. There were two subjects inside the vehicle and they were both detained and released to Travis County Deputies for questioning. No charges were filed in this case.

LPD Detectives were requested by Mesa PD (AZ) Detectives to attempt to locate a wanted suspect and an infant in reference to a Kidnapping/Int. with Child Custody case who were thought to be at the Hampton Inn. Detectives checked the hotel, but were unable to locate neither the suspect nor the victim. However, Detectives were able to obtain evidence in the case, which was forwarded to the Mesa Police Department. The suspect and the child were located back in San Diego, CA.

Detectives were assigned to investigate a report of an Assault that occurred in the 100 block of Triton. The victim alleges an assault occurred by a family member during a disturbance. Detectives are collecting evidence in the case as it remains active.

On August 3, 2016, Lakeway PD officers responded to a series of vehicle burglaries in the St. Andrews subdivision. By the end of the day over a dozen vehicles and one residence were discovered to have been burglarized during the same time period. Detectives and officers worked together to carefully process each crime scene and were able to collect one set of comparable fingerprints. These prints were sent to the Texas DPS crime lab for analysis. Several days later, some of the stolen property was found discarded near a gas station on RR2244 in Austin. Upon further investigation, Detectives were unable to develop any further leads and the case went cold. Nearly six months later, Detectives were notified by the DPS crime lab they were able to match the submitted fingerprints to prints already on file belonging to Bryan Cook of Austin. Having this information, Detectives determined that, shortly after the burglaries occurred, Cook sold several identical items at pawn shops in East Austin. Detectives then learned Cook was already in custody in State Jail on an unrelated motor vehicle theft charge. LPD detectives were able to obtain a warrant for his arrest which was executed while he was in custody. On September 7, 2017, Bryan Cook was convicted on three counts of Burglary of a Motor vehicle and was sentenced to 90 days in State Jail. The successful outcome of this case is a testament to the hard work and effective collaboration between our patrol officers, our crime scene technician, and detectives with our criminal investigations unit and other law enforcement agencies.

Lakeway Police Officers, Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni, Mayor Joe Bain and members of the Lakeway Police Foundation visited twenty-five block parties during this year’s NNO event.

On Wednesday, October 4th, officers joined Chief Radford for the National Coffee with a Cop event which was held at the Whataburger on RR 620. Officers greeted members of the public as they arrived and had many conversations about public safety in and around our area. Mayor Joe Bain, Police Foundation President Bob Stubbs and other volunteers participated in this event. A special thanks to the management and staff at Whataburger for their time and their support!

During the evening of October 4th officers, PD executive staff, Mayor Joe Bain and some firemen from ESD 6 attended the first National Night Out event hosted by Flintrock HOA for their neighborhood. The event was well attended by members of the neighborhood. After remarks by Mayor Bain and Chief Radford we socialized with the attendees, answered questions related to PD and City business. The kids we able to go out and see the police cars, motorcycles, K9 and the Fire truck! It was a very nice event and we appreciate all the support from the residents of Flintrock Falls!
