What a week! The July 4th Parade was outstanding! If you didn't attend, you really missed a great one. It always amazes me how hard our volunteers work and the number of folks that show up to participate in our "small town" event. Thanks to LTISD Superintendent Brad Lancaster for honoring us as Grand Marshall in this years event. I would also like to thank his wife Karen for sharing him with the City of Lakeway! A special thanks to all the volunteers and staff that made this Parade and Day such a success!
Wells Fargo brought their Stagecoach.
Chief Radford and one of our Vets that marched in the parade. We have a very patriotic city and many citizens that fought for our freedom - take a moment to think about where our country would be without their service!
I have seen some complaints recently about mail delivery. Council Member Hennagin has met with the Post Office Officials and seems to have had some success. I have found and signed up for "Informed Delivery" that sends you an email with the days deliveries - a good way to make sure you don't miss something! Here is a link to the info and sign up page. I now get an email daily of what to expect in my mailbox - good service!
Feel generous? Want to help others? How about donating Blood? The next Blood Drive event will be held on July 15th at the Lakeway Activity Center - this will be an important milestone - they expect to mark 4,000 units donated from Lakeway! You can also score a free movie ticket from Alamo Drafthouse. Here is a link to more information.
The Activity Center is really busy with summer events also - here is a link to info on whats available.
CBC will meet in regular session Thursday, 7-13. Here is that agenda. Looks like a fairly short meeting.
Our Firewise folks are working hard on mitigating fire hazards around our greenbelts. Here is a diagram of the area they are currently working on behind the homes on Hurst Creek. Click to enlarge.
The Legislative Special Session is coming up July 18th. The issues I currently have concerns with are the "texting" bill, SB 1 that affects the City's ability to fund itself and proposed tree ordinances.
Texting - While I am glad that the State has decided to implement a "texting" bill and Gov. Abbot has signed it, the state law is much less restrictive and will be nearly impossible to enforce. My concern with the special session is they want to change their bill to override local ordinances. I believe our ordinance is important for the safety of our citizens and if the state doesn't want a "patchwork" of ordinances they should strengthen their bill and make it enforceable.
SB 1 - After the House rejected much of the restrictions in the original SB 1, they are coming back for another run at it. The city taxes are not the burden on taxpayers, our current tax rate is 16.2 cents per hundred dollars - if they want to help the taxpayer they should look at the school funding process (current rate here is $1.41 per hundred dollars).
Trees - Once again, the House rejected legislation that was pushed in the regular session - I want to be sure any legislation will not detrimentally affect our Oak Wilt issues and will allow us to maintain and protect our beautiful hardwoods that are appreciated by Lakeway Citizens.
That's all for today - I didn't get the police report yet but will send it out if I get it.
Thanks for the interest! If you would like to be added (or removed) from my email list, send a note to lakeway@bain.us and I'll get it done.
