Recount, Flint Rock Road, Memorial Day and More!

Another big week is behind us.  It looks like we will get a few obligatory storms for Memorial Day, it's becoming a planned event! For some reason my weather station continues to show rain every day - I'm hoping to get that fixed before Sunday when the real rain starts.  Hopefully this won't turn into a severe rain event, the weather man says it won't!

Monday, Travis County and volunteers from the City accomplished a recount of Proposition 1 that was requested.  I appreciate the work of the committee, committee chair and City Secretary JoAnn Touchstone.  I would also like to thank Dana Debeauvior, Michael Winn and their staff that made this effort easy and painless.  As expected the county efforts on election day and on the canvass were correct.  There were 2,117 votes cast in the Prop 1 election, 1,063 for and 1,054 against - Proposition 1 passed.

Both incumbent's won re-election - Bridge Bertram with 1,146 votes and Ron Massa with 1,135 votes.   They both worked hard in their first term and I look forward to working with them in the future!

One thing really confused me, 495 folks voted against Prop. 2.  This reinstated the 1/4 cent sales tax that is used for road maintenance in Lakeway.  This has been in effect for many years and the city collects a little over $500,000 a year.  If the Prop would have been defeated, that 1/4 cent would have been picked up by some other taxing authority - the Library, EMS or other.  The sales tax rate would have stayed the same and road maintenance would have to come from property tax.  This year we are using the money to resurface and repair Hurst Creek Road.

Legislative Update:
The Senate has a committee working on HB 2445 - this bill has an amendment attached by Senator Hancock because his bill (SB 451) died in committee.  I have relayed my displeasure with the amendment to Senator Dawn Buckingham - she is on the committee reviewing the bill.  This bill relates to our Short Term Rental ordinance.

Tuesday I was honored to present scholarships to two Lake Travis High School Graduates.  Meghan McBurney and Matthew Funk were presented with $1000 scholarships made possible by Progressive Waste Solutions.  Congratulations to both of you and good luck in your college endeavors!

Flint Rock Rd. has been an issue this week also.  Construction had to close Flintrock Trace to do water and wastewater work - although signs had been up for over a week, folks didn't believe it and continued to try to use Flintrock Trace and had to turn around at the barrier.  Some detoured through the business park and one truck spilled some white paint.  The city has worked to improve the situation with more signage and will also clean up the parking lot.  It seems to be much improved at this point.

The light at Flint Rock Road and 620 was a significant issue when this change was made also.  We were able to get TxDOT out the next morning to change the signal timing - it is working much better now but still is an issue.  We have a meeting with TxDOT next week and will be working on changing that intersection to three lanes that will allow a double left.  More on that after the meeting.  It looks like much of this will be over in a few weeks, please have patience with the construction.

New flashing pedestrian signals were installed on Highland Blvd at Tavish Trail along with intersection warning signs on Lohmans Crossing near Tuscan Village.

Lone Star Paving had a meeting with the City about the Hurst Creek Road project.  We expect that project to start around the end of June - message boards will be displayed a couple of weeks befor construction starts.

Here is a link to Activity Center information - a little late for some of the events but most is still ahead of us.

CBC met in regular session on Thursday - here was the agenda.  Item 4's revision was approved and 8 of the inspections were approved.  408 Hust Creek was denied because of an unpainted spark arrestor.

The Live Oak Tennis Court resurfacing will begin on May 30th and is expected to complete on June 6th.

Lakeway's Memorial Day Service was held Friday at Emmaus Church.  The guest speaker was Rear Admiral Judson "Jud" Scott USN retired.  I learned more about the Korean conflict than I thought was possible.  It was a GREAT event and was well attended.  We have a rich heritage in Lakeway - many of our residents have served and are serving in our Armed Forces.  Our own Mike Olson played the Pipes and also Taps.  Thanks to all of the "Old Guard" for giving us the opportunity to live in freedom and celebrate as we choose.  Think about our fallen and the real reason for Memorial Day while enjoying the long weekend holiday!  Thanks to Al Weber for the photo's!  Here's a link to a Memorial Day Tribute you might enjoy.

It's time to start thinking about July 4th and the Lakeway festivities surrounding it.  Brad Lancaster, LTISD Superintendent has been chosen to be the Grand Marshall.  Here is a link to more information.
