Here is a link to the agenda. We approved a change to the zoning ordinance that will allow certain types of indoor storage in C-1 areas, but they have to be approved as a "Special Use" and there are several restrictions. Lakeway Plaza Partners also received approval of a SUP for that use for a property they own on Lohmans Crossing.
Judge Madison swore in our two new Council Members and Tributes to both Sandy Cox and Dave Taylor were presented. We appointed Dwight Haley as Mayor Pro Tem for the next year.
We approved a HOT request for funds from TexARTS. They are using the funds to advertise their program to areas outside of the Lakeway area to expand their market - this is what these funds are supposed to be used for and they will do data gathering to determine if it was successful.
The City purchased the Live Oak Tennis Courts from ClubCorp Golf of Texas - this has been in the works for several years and I am glad it has finally been completed. There is money in the budget for repairs and updates to be made.
The City entered into an agreement with Lakeway Airpark to address some flooding issues for residents on the East side of the Airpark. The Airpark will be managing the project and will request funds after the project is done.
The City of Lakeway and Standing Military Committee would like to remind the public that the city’s Memorial Day ceremony will be on Friday, May 27, at 11 a.m. at Emmaus Catholic Parish, 1718 Lohmans Crossing, in Lakeway. The ceremony will not be held on the Monday holiday. USAF Ret. Lt. General Brett M. Dula will be the guest speaker, and the Lakeway Police Department Color Guard will post the colors. The Lohmann’s Ford Chapter of the DAR will place a memorial wreath, and the Lakeway Sing Along choir will sing the national anthem and “God Bless America.” For information about the ceremony, contact the Lakeway Heritage Center at 512-608-9533 or history@lakeway-tx.gov.
There have been some issues on the Flintrock Road Project including flooding and speeding in the area. The road is currently
closed to through traffic because of a failure at Hurst Creek. The contractor and Travis County are working to repair the issue and hopefully the road will reopen around 7 p.m. Friday evening. We have also ordered 10 speed limit signs and as soon as they are posted, both Lakeway Police and Travis County Sheriff Officers will be issuing citations!
Don't forget to VOTE! WE have an important election going on to elect a State Senator - let's be sure and cast a ballot for Dawn Buckingham so we will have local representation. Election day is next Tuesday if you can't get to a ballot box for early voting!
I attended a reception for Women in Transportation International on Wednesday evening along with many other area leaders that are involved in the process of improving our area transportation. It was a great meeting and I came away with some new contacts and information that we can use.
The Lakeway Arts Committee has started a blog to update the citizens on events and happenings the Art's Committee is working on. Here is a link to the page that will be updated as new things come up!
CBC will meet in regular session this Thursday - here is the agenda.
An offer was made on the Director of BDS position this week and Ray Miller has accepted. Staff is confident that Mr. Miller will be a successful manager of the Building and Development Department and we are looking forward to have him as part of the management team!
Steve Jones and I will meet with TxDOT representatives to discuss access control on RM 620 from Lakeway Boulevard to Lohmans Spur. We will be looking at ways to limit turning movements to make the highway function better and safer.
This week we met with a representative of the Bee Creek Estates HOA to discuss plans for the ballfields on Bee Creek Road. This was the second meeting we have had with our neighbors. They are naturally concerned with the possible impacts the development might have on their way of life. We shared with him what little has been decided so far and offered to keep in touch as things progress.
Andra Dearing reports that we have another swim meet tomorrow morning, and the Summer Kick-Off at the LAC from 10 am to 1 pm. She encourages everyone to come and check out our summer programs.
I appreciate the blue lights that have been displayed around the City to show appreciation to our GREAT Police Force - I know it is appreciated! This weekend, Saturday 5/21, from 4pm-7pm, the LPD Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association is hosting an appreciation picnic here in our parking lot. There will be food, drinks and games. We will have a small ceremony at 5pm for our police K-9 Orka, to announce her retirement! Also any VIP’s that are here will speak at that time.
It was also brought to my attention that this week was also designated as EMS Week - please take the time to thank our first responder's for the wonderful job they do!
From the Chief:
Routine traffic stops resulted in the following charges; Out of Jurisdiction Warrant X 1,
Lakeway Warrant X 1, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia X 5, Driving while License Suspended X 1, and Driving while Intoxicated X 1.
Officers responded to a Longwood Cove address in reference to a theft call. Upon arrival it was learned that some power tools were taken from a job site, the victim identified a possible suspect, and this case is being investigated.
Officers responded to a Brooks Hollow address for a reported disturbance call. Upon arrival it was learned that a road rage had occurred and both parties were now at this address. The parties were separated, one subject was issued a criminal trespass warning, no further action was taken.
Officers responded to a Jack Nicklaus address for a disturbance call. Upon arrival several males were on the roadway. As the officers began their investigation it was learned that the subjects were leaving a party. One subject was arrested for an outstanding warrant and transported to Travis County Jail; 5 subjects were issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor and released to a parent, and one person was released to a parent without charges.
The heavy rains have caused some road closures in the area. Flintrock is the only road still closed and should be reopened on Friday. As always a good rule to follow is, if there is water rolling over the roadway, turn around, and don’t drown!
==================
Have a wonderful weekend - it looks like a winner. If you would like to be added to my email list, send a note to lakeway@bain.us and I'll get you added.
