Traffic, CIP, Memorial Day, Pedernales Election and More!

The weather cycle looks like the same one we were in during the late 80's - sunshine and a few thunderstorms once or twice a week.  Luckily the severe weather has left us alone for the most part!  Not too much rain last night, maybe a quarter of an inch - lots of lightning and thunder!  Beautiful day now!

I'm a little late on this but the Drug Take Back is today at the Police Department - here is more info.

==========Traffic Update==========

We met with Terry McCoy, TxDot District Engineer Monday about traffic issues.  I'm hoping we will move forward with the lane addition to 620 from just North of Lohmans Crossing to Spillman Loop.  This will include intersection improvements at Falconhead and Ladera also.  TxDot is spending about  $1.4M for these improvements.

Wednesday we met with Victor Vargas, TxDot Area Manager - he will be keeping us updated on construction in the City on 620.  We are also looking at putting in a raised median between Lohmans Spur and Lohmans on RR 620 to stop the left turns into the shopping area.  More on that as I find out.   We are also looking at ways to improve the Lohmans Spur and 620 intersection.

At the next meeting of CAMPO we will be getting an update on the proposed "Sub-Regional" study for Western Travis County.  This was voted on and approved by a 17-3 vote about a year ago.  It was delayed until completion of the 620 study we were able to get TxDot to do - that is substantially complete now.  I'm getting rumors that Travis County does not want this study done - I hope that is not the case.  We need traffic help out here and we need a plan to fix the issue.  Our County leaders need to help.  We may need to fund a portion from tax dollars - if so, I hop I will have your support!
=========================

City Council will hold a workshop Monday morning at 10 a.m. to discuss the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).  We need to look forward and plan for the needs of the City - it's especially important with the high growth rate the area is experiencing.  Here is the agenda.

Steve Jones, Chessie Zimmerman and I attended a UT Law presentation at the Downtown Radison all day Thursday and Friday.  Lot's of good information, some of which I had years ago!  We also sent members of ZAPCO to presentations from the same group on Wednesday - it will help with future decisions!

USAF Ret. Lt. General Brett M. Dula will be the guest speaker at Lakeway's Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. May 27 at Emmaus Catholic Parish, 1718 Lohmans Crossing, Lakeway.  Here is a little more information.  I look forward to seeing all of you there!  Here is the program.

For those West of Hurst Creek, the Pedernales Electric Coop is holding there elections for Directors.  As you all know, I don't interject politics unless it is important for Lakeway.  This one is!  I would appreciate a vote for Judge James Oakley of Burnet County - he is our current director and is also President of the Board of Directors.  He has been a great asset to PEC users, has lowered rates and made sure our service is top notch.  He also supports us at CAMPO and is married to Julie Oakley, our Finance Director.  Here is a link to more information.

Chief Abbott - ESD #6 says the BOD has approved a full time position for a wildfire mitigation specialist - this means the city will be able to contract with the ESD for services without hiring our own professional - this will save us money!

Chessie Zimmerman reports that customer service has improved at City Hall - we now have staff to keep BDS open through the lunch hour!

The storm Wednesday caused a China Berry tree to fall into Lakeway Blvd.  Public Works arrived at the scene about 3 a.m and removed it from the roadway - we have also had brush dropped off at Public Works which indicates there were more downed limbs around the city.

From the Chief:

Officers responded to numerous alarm calls during a severe thunderstorm that passed thru the area. In addition, officers dealt with several downed trees that temporarily closed roadways, the roads were cleared by the next morning with minimal effect on traffic in the area.
