I recorded 2.8 inches of rain Thursday in a little over an hour at my home in Lakeway. We had a cell form and grow while staying stationary right over central "Old Lakeway". This is a picture of water pouring into the Stoney Creek Condos - luckily the sand bags were successful in keeping the water out of the residence. At the same time about 2 miles down the road, there was almost no rain at all - very isolated showers.
The City has finally seen permit requests slow down. That with contractors handling all the roof permits, new hires in the Building and Development Services and terrific work by the existing staff we are approaching less than 3 weeks to apply for and receive a permit. We are moving forward to make sure we are staffed to be sure residents are able to get permits and help in a reasonable time frame.
The Board of Adjustment met Wednesday June 17th on two items. First was an appeal of a ZAPCO ruling that denied residents on Rolling Green a Special Use Permit to do physical therapy in a home. BOA members upheld the ZAPCO ruling - they found no error in that ruling.
The second item was a request from the Emmaus Catholic Church for another extension to allow temporary buildings remain for another 5 years. Father Hose stated they would not request another extension - that request was approved.
The Board of Ethics also met on Wednesday. they welcomed Matt Boucher and Jessica Putonti as new members. There was a vote to approve updates to the Code of Ethics summary and mandatory disclosure forms and Laurie Higginbotham was re-elected Chair and Tom Brewer and re-elected as Vice Chair. Luckily we have very little that this Board has to act on!
There was a fire in the 15300 Block of Barrie Drive Tuesday 6/16. Within minutes of the initial 911 call, LTFR fire crews arrived on scene in the 15300 Blk. of Barrie Drive to find smoke coming from the roof and multiple attic areas of a single family home. Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the attic fires and prevent further damage to the other portions of the home. One adult female was home during the time of the fire and was able to safely exit the home without further incident. There were no injuries reported and LTFR investigators have ruled the fire was a result of a lightning strike. Report and picture courtesy of LTFR.
City Building Commission will meet in regular session on 6-25. Here is that agenda.
4th of July Parade entry deadline is June 26th! Here is a link to the form - it's going to be a GREAT 4th!
A new scam is going around - callers may identify themselves as employees of Travis County Sheriff's dept. They are telling the victim they have an outstanding warrant and want them to buy prepaid cards to pay the warrant fees. This is not procedure for any legitimate law enforcement office - anyone that is a victim should call 512-314-7590.
From Steve Jones:
Mayor Bain and I attended an Austin Chamber of Commerce meeting this week in which TxDOT and City of Austin representatives announced approval of significant improvements to IH 35 in Austin. The plans include, among other things, new travel lanes for additional traffic capacity on the freeway.
I am following up with TxDOT regarding the request at Monday’s Council meeting for a new traffic signal on RM 620 at Dave Drive. I do not believe that TxDOT will be anxious to install one. This is a very problematic location to install a traffic signal.
The Board of Adjustment met this week and rejected a request to overturn the Zoning and Planning Commission’s denial of a home occupation permit that would have allowed the operation of a physical therapy business in a home on Rolling Green Drive. The board also approved an extension of time to allow Emmaus Church to continue to use temporary buildings for office space.
Public Works reported that Alpha Paving repaired several pavement failures throughout the city this week. Most of them were located on Flint Rock Rd between Jack Nicklaus and Flint Rock Tr. Public Works employees also worked the first event at the Lake Travis Regional Reuse & Recycle Center on Wednesday. The vehicle turnout was just enough to give the crew some good training in preparation for future events.
From Chief Radford:
LPD made multiple traffic stops this week, some resulted in the following charges, Driving while Intoxicated X 1; Possession of Marijuana X 1; Driving Under the Influence X 1; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia X 4.

A Malabar couple reported that unknown persons, burglarized their vehicles parked in their driveway. Both vehicles were left unlocked. A GPS was reported missing from one of the vehicles.
Officers took three separate reports of Fraud on June 17th. A subject identifying himself as Sergeant Martin with the Travis County S.O. attempts to get citizens to pay off fictitious warrants for not appearing for jury duty. This is an ongoing problem and officers are attempting to educate the public about this scam.
Officers recovered a stolen vehicle which was left abandoned, and parked in front of a business on RR 620S. The vehicle was listed as stolen by Bee Cave P.D.
Operations division prepared a Public Service Announcement flyer, which has also been sponsored by TCSO and BCPD, which will be printed and posted in area businesses, specifically business who sell prepaid debit cards. This is in reaction to a recent influx in reports of phone scams. Over the last 6 weeks, LPD has received nearly a dozen reports of citizens being scammed by a subject(s) who is calling and representing themselves as law enforcement officials. The subject is convincing the victims to purchase prepaid debit cards in order to “pay off fines” received for missing jury duty. Another scam that has been reported involves a subject(s) calling victims and informing them that a family member has been arrested in Mexico. The subject(s) convince the victims to wire large amounts of money (in one case $30,000.00) in order to “bail” the family member out of jail or to cover legal expenses.
Our Animal Protection Officer was involved in a case in which a pet bobcat escaped the owner’s home. The bobcat returned home after several hours. The Animal Protection Officer is working with the owner of the bobcat to relocate the animal to a nature preserve.
That's all for today, the Lakeway "Garage Sale" is going on at the Activity Center rain or shine - take a few minutes to go down there and check it out - runs from 8AM till noon.
