Rain? Court Award, Police and More!

Isn't this a GRAND day!  About half an inch of rain yesterday and more on the way today and tomorrow.  I know it's the weekend, but we really need the rain.  The lake is up to about 630 feet, still about 40 feet below normal.  Today is the Crawfish Boil at the Sundancer Grill benefiting the Central Texas Water Coalition - they have been instrumental in getting some of the rules changed that may prevent this water emergency in the future - but we still nee to fill the lake!

We have an election coming up!  Five candidates are vying for 3 Council Seats - ALL are GREAT candidates.  There will be a Candidates Forum sponsored by the LCC on April 16th at the Activity Center.  Come meet the candidates, listen and make up your mind who t vote for to represent you in City Government.  The City will stream the Forum if you are unable to attend.  Here is a link to more information an how to access the video.

Lakeway Municipal Court recently won its 6th traffic safety award at the annual Traffic Safety Conference on March 30th in Austin.  Here is a link to more information!

Steve, Chessie and I met with elected officials and City Managers of West Lake Hills and Rolling Wood Tuesday.  Since I represent all the "Small Cities" in Travis County, I am making the rounds to talk to other communities about transportation issues.  It was a great meeting and we will work together to keep attention on the important issues facing all of our Cities.

From Steve Jones:
This week, ZAPCO approved vacating the two plats of the Cherry Knoll property.  This is the property from which we are acquiring most of the right-of-way for the realignment if Flint Rock Road.  The plats will be on your next agenda for vacation.  Following that, we can schedule a closing for acquisition of the property.

The Flint Rock Road project is still on schedule.  We are meeting with utility companies and scheduling clearing of their facilities.  We are in the final stages of right-of-way acquisition, and the plans and specifications are complete.  We are currently providing the bid package to Travis County for advertising and award.  We hope to have a contract awarded in July or August.  That would allow a construction start date in the fourth quarter.

We received an impromptu tour of the Williams Tract (future home of LTYA) this week courtesy of Larry Williams.  A photo of a meadow on the property is attached.  We also met with a representative of LTYA to begin drafting a lease agreement for the property.  If you would like to have input into the draft agreement, please let me know.

Staff met with Leslie Sweet, Director of Public Affairs for HEB.  Ms. Sweet is making plans for a ribbon cutting in October.  She was also interested in information on how HEB can begin supporting local community service organizations.

Last week, I attended a public meeting on planned improvements to Loop 1 by the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority.  The project, known as MoPac South, proposes to add four new express lanes to Loop 1 between First Street and Slaughter Lane.  I believe the improvements will serve Lakeway residents very well.  CTRMA has agreed to make a short presentation of the project at our May Council meeting.

The TCEQ made two favorable announcements this week.  First, the commission approved an emergency order allowing LCRA to vary from its water management plan and curtail the release of water from the Highland Lakes for irrigation purposes again this year; thus saving hundreds of thousands of acre-feet of water for Central Texas water customers.  This is the fourth consecutive year that TCEQ and LCRA have approved such an order, and it emphasizes the need to amend LCRA’s water management plan to protect the drinking water supply for our area.  The commission also approved an order to curtail the release of water from the Highland Lakes for the “blue sucker” from 500 cfs to 300 cfs.

Chessie met with developers regarding several projects or properties, including a 3-acre tract on Bee Creek Road, the proposed commercial development at the corner of Wild Cherry and Peak Lookout Drive, Discovery Point, and undeveloped land in the Lohmans Crossing/Birrell Drive area.

From the Police:
Routine Traffic Stops resulted in the following arrests: Possession of Drug Paraphernalia X 2, and Driving While Intoxicated X 2

1. Officers took a call of a theft at a home on Challenger.  The victim’s wallet was stolen from his back porch, possibly by workers doing some septic work in his back yard.  The case is being investigated by CID.
2. Animal Protection officer found a loose Iguana on Sailmaster, which was later returned to the owner after a social media posting asking for the owner to contact LPD.
3. Officers were called to investigate an assault on Royal Oak.  There was an altercation between a homeowner and golfers on the course.  The case is being investigated by Detectives.
4. Officers were called to an Assist EMS call on Sailmaster.  A male had apparently overdosed on the Synthetic Drug “K2”.  He was transported to the hospital for treatment.

5. We received a disposition from one of our burglary cases from 2014. On May 29, 2014, residents at a home on Farris Drive called and reported that their house had been burglarized. Det. Proctor and CST Smith responded to the scene and conducted a thorough investigation. Several days later, Bee Caves Police Department responded to a residence in Falcon Head West in reference to an attempted burglary in progress. BCPD Officers were able to locate the suspect and after coordinating with Det. Proctor, it was determined that the suspect in their case was the same suspect in our case. Det. Proctor was able to recover a majority of the victim’s property and filed burglary charges on the suspect. Today, we learned that the suspect plead guilty to the charges and received 8 years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice system.
================
As reported by Steve Jones, we met with representatives from HEB this week - they are planning for the opening of the new store sometime in October - this is going to be a GREAT store.  There is going to be a large restaurant as part of the store - it looks like a great addition to the area.

Thank you for your continued support - if you would like to be added to my email list send a note to lakeway@bain.us and I'll get you fixed up.  Questions about City stuff?  Send me an email!  I'm looking forward to serving the community for the next three years as your Mayor!
