Free Concert!, Police, Council + More!

Good Afternoon!  It's 65 degrees and sunny on December 12th in Lakeway - what more could we ask for?

There will be a free concert by the United States Air Force "Band of the West" at the Performing Arts Center at Lake Travis High School Saturday - once again it's free!  Here's a link to get free tickets, it will be a GRAND show!  Sign up and enjoy!

The Lakeway Police Foundation it holding their Gala tonight at Antebellum Oaks, 14913 Murfin Rd.   All proceeds from the gala will benefit Lakeway Police Department and the policemen and policewomen who protect the community of Lakeway.

With all the recent issues with police departments, one of our residents took this picture of one of our finest - changing a tire for a resident.  You might have also seen the article in the Lake Travis View about the officers wearing cameras for over 3 years now.  We are ahead of the curve and have a GREAT police force.  Thank them for their service when you see them!!

Dallas Gorman from the Activity Center just sent out a "Welcome Letter" to all the new members.  It has a lot of good information!  Here is a link to the letter.

City Council will meet in regular session Monday, December 15th in Council Chambers at 6:30.  Here is a link to the agenda.  Here is a link to the meeting packets given to Council Members.

From Steve Jones:
Mayor DeOme, Chessie Zimmerman, and I met with representatives of Stratus Properties this week to discuss The Oaks.  The new HEB is scheduled to open on October 30, 2015.  We also began sharing ideas for the second phase of the project, including our idea of developing an arts district.

On Monday, I attended an environmental summit hosted by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.  I learned that cars and trucks are responsible for the majority of air pollution in the Austin area.  I also learned that it is not really the cars and trucks; it is the fact that they are stuck in traffic.  Moving vehicles emit relatively few pollutants.  Reducing traffic congestion could be the single most effective way to improve and maintain air quality in the Austin metro area.

Earl Foster, General Manager of Lakeway MUD, told me this week that the MUD plans to drill some test wells to see if a sufficient quantity of groundwater is available as a backup water source.  They will not know for sure until testing is complete, but there is reason to believe that a group of wells might be able to supply a sufficient flow of water for emergency use.

Monday night, the CAMPO Transportation Policy Board adopted a preferred scenario of road projects that will make up the roadway portion of the CAMPO Long Range (2040) Transportation Plan.  Included in that list is $52 million for the addition of two new travel lanes on RM 620 from Anderson Mill Road to SH 71 in Bee Cave.  Lakeway did not propose or request that project because we do not believe that additional lanes on the existing RM 620 is a meaningful long-term solution to traffic congestion.  However, it is meaningful that CAMPO approved a project of significance for our area.  We plan to continue pursuing funding for a corridor study to determine the best long-term solutions to traffic congestion in western Travis County.

Public Works reported that Progressive hired Ramming Paving to sealcoat Salinas Cove in Rough Hollow to repair damage done when one of their trucks had a hydraulic spill.

Public Works had a crew do a concrete pour on Atlantic Street near the intersection of Lakeway Drive, where a void formed underneath the asphalt from recent heavy rains.  They concreted a large area to keep this from happening again at this location.

Chief Radford reports:

Officers responded to a deceased person on Spellbrook.  The deceased person was under a doctor’s care and terminally ill.  The initial indications of death are of natural causes.  CID will follow up with the medical examiner’s office for a final ruling.
Officers were dispatched twice to Clubhouse drive regarding a family disturbance.  The officers eventually arrested an adult family member for assault family violence.
Officers have been dispatched repeatedly to persons panhandling in front of the Randall’s grocery store.  There has been no violation of law for the officers to take action on.  Research is being done to suggest a city ordinance be drafted to deal with this type of situation.
Officers responded to a heroin overdose.  Heroin was seized and charges are pending.  This type of issue is very common around other parts of the country / state and agencies have had to issue their officers Naloxone applicators.  We will monitor this issue to determine our future needs in this area.
Copper fittings were stolen from an unlocked construction trailer on Peninsula.  The reported loss was estimated at $2000.  The case has been forwarded to CID for follow up.
A routine traffic stop led to the arrest of the driver for a Possession of Controlled Substance warrant out of Harris County.
Officers responded to a residence on Sailmaster for an intentional overdose.  The subject was transported to LRMC and officers completed a Peace Officer Emergency Detention on the subject.  The subject was transferred to another facility for further treatment.
One of our K9 officers did a presentation at the Hudson Bend Middle School for their career day event.  The presentation was well received and staff appreciated our involvement.
Detectives are working on a Burglary of a Building case which involves a construction site in Rough Hollow.  Tools and other items were taken from a storage shed on the site.
Detectives continue to work fraud and identity theft cases from recent weeks.  Only one new case was reported this week.
Detective Gavit, Megan Coutee, and Nicole Sooter continue their work on the best practices program.
Detective Gavit and Sgt. Fisher attended a Taser Instructor Course this week and will be conducting our officers update training in the coming months.
Dispatch Supervisor Menoskey is working on the ProQA program for our dispatch center.  The scheduled installation is set for mid-January.

The City Building Commission met on Thursday and approved variance requests for landscaping and fencing at 700 Hurst Creek Road, fencing material at 1501 Lohmans Crossing, and fencing location at 215 Lombardia Dr.  The Commission also determined that view blocking was not an issue with regard to an addition at 609 Ladin Lane, alternative roofing materials were acceptable at 411 Hazeltine Drive, and alternative fencing for a “sport court” was permissible at 202 Agave Bloom Cove.  This was the only meeting of the Commission for the month of December.  They will reconvene on their regular schedule on January 8, 2015.

I sincerely appreciate all the continued support!  If you would like to be added to my email list please send a note to lakeway@bain.us.  Same if you would like to be removed.

Have a wonderful weekend - I am looking forward to unpacking boxes at our new home!

See you at the Police Gala tonight!
