Drowning, Rain, Elections and More!

It's a BEAUTIFUL Saturday morning - why am I writing a blog?  You should be outside enjoying the weather too, it's going to be winter soon....

There was sad news this week.  A pregnant woman was unresponsive in a pool in Flintrock by her mother.  She was expecting to have the baby in the next few days.  CPR was administered and victims were transported by StarFlight to University Medical Center Brackenridge where both were pronounced deceased.  It has been ruled an accidental death by drowning.

Lakeway was the recipient of beneficial rain this week!  The Airpark got slightly over 2.5 inches of rain - I haven't heard of any flooding issues, it appears to have been slow enough that most of it soaked in.  The bad news is the lake didn't get much help,  it's come up only a few inches.

The Elections Tuesday were successful for the City Propositions.  All 12 Charter amendments passed, most of them with a significant majority.  The bond to buy 70 acres of land to be used as recreational property was also successful - 56% to 44%.  Thanks to all the Lakeway folks that turned out to make this possible.  The City of Austin will have several runoff elections, so some of the signs lining 620 will remain for a while.

Lakeway Dr., Lakeway Blvd. and Bee Creek Rd. will be getting some maintenance and changes.  Starting next week crews will be crack sealing both roads so expect to see crews out working.  Bee Creek will be changed over to the other lanes to enable work on the side we've been using.  Here is a link to more info.

CBC will meet next week on November 13th.  Here is that agenda.

From Steve Jones:
Staff debriefed the “table-top” emergency management exercise held on October 16.  The primary concern was continued development of communication systems that will be reliable in a major event.  We also discussed the need for a dedicated emergency operations center that could serve the entire south lake area.  It has become clear that a large event can easily involve responses from LTFR, Lakeway, LTISD, LRMC, Bee Cave, The Hills, and others.  We are scheduled to tour of the LRMC emergency operations center, which may be a resource as an interim facility.

Next week Lone Star Asphalt will crack seal Lakeway Drive.  We do not have an exact day when they will begin, but it will take them about three days to complete.  They will also do some asphalt repairs in a few areas.  The main repair will be around a manhole on Serene Hills Drive.  Lakeway Drive is also scheduled to be re-striped the week of the 17th.  Last week, TxDOT painted the triple turn arrow on the southbound middle lane at Lohmans Crossing and 620, and the proper signage is now installed for the additional right turn lane.

We currently have job postings for City Marshal and Deputy Court Clerk in Court department, Operator I in Parks department, Accountant in Finance department and a Police Officer I.  The job postings are on our website at www.lakeway-tx.gov and Texas Municipal League’s career center at www.tml.org.

The Zoning and Planning Commission met this week to consider several requests for signage.  ZAPCO approved the sign plan for Lakeway Medical Village, temporary signs for the 2015 HBA Parade of Homes in Serene Hills, and a variance to the sign code for project development signs for Oaks at Lakeway.

Chessie and Paul met with representatives from Tuscan Village to discuss the development of the commercial tract adjacent to the library.

Paving is occurring this week on Bee Creek Road from Highlands Blvd to HWY 71, with striping immediately following.  Once that is complete, the schedule is for this traffic to switch to the east side of the road from Old Bee Creek Rd to the north entrance of the Middle School.  Traffic will be split on both sides of the newly constructed median closer to the traffic circle at Highlands Blvd.  The striping and traffic switch is anticipated to occur midday tomorrow, November 8.  All other traffic control will remain in place from the north entrance to SH 71.  This schedule is subject to change due to weather and/or field conditions.

Chief Radford reports:
Routine traffic stops led to the following charges being filed
o Driving while license invalid
o Possession of drug paraphernalia
o Warrant arrest X 2
A Lakeway resident was the victim of a phone fraud in which the caller identified themselves as a Travis County Deputy and demanded payment by debit card for failing to appear for a jury summons.  The resident was defrauded of $450.  The case is under investigation.
LPD officers responded to LRMC and evaluated a suicidal subject.  The subject was admitted to a private mental health facility.
Detective Howell and Crime Scene Tech Smith have recovered and returned to the owner a stolen motor vehicle.

Detective Howell and Crime Scene Tech Smith recovered a stolen kayak.  Detective Howell has obtained a warrant of the arrest of a known suspect.

That's all for right now, more as I find out!  If you would like to be on my email list, send a note to lakeway@bain.us and I'll fix you up.  Have a GREAT weekend!
