Another Fire, Car Crash, Lots of Info!

Let's see what I can report this week!

Looks like another house fire in Lakeway at 414 Eagle last week - this one was contained to the chimney flue - maybe it would be a good idea to have the chimneys inspected and cleaned on homes in Lakeway - especially the older ones!

Here is another GREAT report from Andra Dearing on the happenings in Parks and Recreation last month.  Take a look, she does a great job on this.

CBC will be meeting Thursday, March 13th in the Council Chambers.  Here is that agenda.  Several inspections and a decision on whether to allow artificial grass - should be an interesting meeting.

The Police Department has set up an anonymous crime tip service - here is a link to the press release.  Looks like a good service!

Check out the "Big Band Bash" Monday, March 10th at the Activity Center from 8 to 10 PM.  Doors open at 7:30 and it's free!

Looks like TXDOT has come up with another way to make our commute from Lakeway into Bee Cave a little harder for a while.  They are putting in wider culverts and drains and changing lane configuration on about a mile of 71 NW of Hamilton Pool road.  Looks like this will last until the late Fall of 2014 - UGH.

The LT High School was vandalized on the morning of March 2nd with red and blue images that included the words "West Lake" - Sheriff's department is working to arrest those responsible.

This Just IN:  One of our good friends in the Hills woke up to a LOT of noise outside their home this morning - it seems a lady ran over their mailbox.  She also flipped her car and did lots of damage.  Luckily, she walked away - I have a few questions about this!  Looks like she was going pretty fast and it was REAL early.....  Looks like a mess to me.  Pretty dangerous over there in the Hills....

From Steve Jones:
You will recall that when we closed Lohmans Crossing and Lakeway Boulevard to thru trucks, there was concern that truck traffic would move to Flint Rock Road.  We have watched that issue, and it appears to be happening.  We are still gathering traffic counts, but our police report heavy truck traffic on Flint Rock Road.  If the traffic counts demonstrate an appreciable increase in truck traffic, we may want to consider prohibiting thru trucks on Flint Rock Road.

From Chessie:
I attended three different meetings with property owners whose land northwest of the Bee Creek/SH 71 intersection is being considered for annexation.  Our discussions were focused on the process, and on the impacts of annexation and zoning on existing uses and proposed development.

I met with representatives from Stratus and Enviroplan (architect) to discuss building layout, exterior finishes, landscaping, and lighting for the Oaks at Lakeway, and

Troy, Paul, and I met with representatives from Las Ventanas to discuss final acceptance of Highlands Boulevard and proposed amendments to the 1997 development agreement.

From Troy Anderson:
Highlights from this week include items from the Zoning Commission meeting Wednesday morning.  The zoning change and subsequent request for special use permit (SUP) for self-storage facility was postponed until staff can prepare an update to the City’s Future Land Use Plan, particularly as that relates to the Ranch Road 620 Corridor.  Expect the Comprehensive Plan Update, Zoning Change, and SUP applications to appear on the April Zoning Commission agenda.

An SUP application for childcare facility at the southeast corner of Lohmans Crossing and Rolling Green received unanimous recommendation for approval.

An SUP application for drive-through at the northwest corner of Ranch Road 620 and Medical Parkway received a majority recommendation for approval.

A Final Plat for Estates of Flintrock received unanimous recommendation for approval.

The SUP’s a for childcare facility and drive-through will appear on the March 17, 2014, Council agenda along with the Final Plat for Estates of Flintrock.

The replat of the Lochan Ora Subdivision was postponed to the April Zoning Commission agenda.

Finally, the sign plan for the Oaks @ Lakeway PUD was approved by the Zoning Commission.

Chief Court Clerk Ruth Sandoval reports:
“For the month of February the following cases were filed: 335 traffic violations, 57 State Law, and 8 City Ordinances violations, for a total of 400 violations filed.  We were able to clear 163 warrants, and 93 new warrants were issued.  The collections for the month were $85,879.”

Dale DeLong reports:
“We met with Alpha Paving regarding the milling project on Lakeway Drive and Lakeway Boulevard.  It looks like work will begin on March 19 (weather permitting) starting on Lakeway Drive.  Alpha will close the portion of Lakeway Drive between Cross Creek and Lakeway Boulevard, and traffic will be detoured down Cross Creek and Lohmans Crossing.  The work, which is projected to last one day, will begin at 9:00 a.m. with a half a day of milling and the other half laying down the asphalt.  Message boards will be placed out on the 17th alerting motorist of the detour.  The milling of Lakeway Blvd will take place on the 20 (weather permitting).  The inside lane will be shut down from Blue Jay Drive to The Hills Drive.  This is also projected to take one day to complete.

Sharon Cole reports:
“We posted jobs for swim center seasonal positions and Human Resources Manager, and received 25 applications for swim center positions and 20 for Human Resources Manager.  Applications are being reviewed.  The federal government issued an updated Model Notice for the Affordable Care Act.  Each employee must receive this notification.”

Devin Monk reports:
Summit Integration Systems installed the projector screen and mounted the rear projector to the ceiling of the AV room.  The city now has a high-definition screen shown at the correct aspect ratio. The contractors also corrected the audio system’s volume level for recording and live stream viewing of meetings. The project is almost complete.

I attended the Wildfire Steering Committee meeting on Wednesday where plans were discussed for a mini-workday fuel reduction event March 22 in Hamilton Greenbelt, the City of Lakeway Road Show Booth for Eggstravaganza on April 12, and a National Wildfire Preparedness Day event May 3 in conjunction with the Steiner Ranch Firewise Committee. The May 3 event will likely be at Lake Travis Elementary School.

I will present the City of Lakeway Road Show Booth concept to the Lakeway Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association Board tonight (Thursday) to seek their participation in it for Eggstravaganza.

Chief Radford reports:
Officers assisted with a house fire at 414 Eagle.  The fire was contained to the chimney flue.

A routine traffic stop culminated in the seizure of a small amount of marijuana and some prescription pain pills, driver was arrested.

A driver was found passed out behind the wheel of their vehicle on Lohmans Crossing.  The driver was subsequently arrested for DWI.

Detective Proctor filed a felony warrant on a man who stole his ex-roommate's credit card and used it for various purposes around the Austin area.

TxDOT has implemented a new crash reporting system and our agency was trained on its use this week. The new system allows for online entry versus paper entry. The new system will allow for easy search capabilities for issues related to crash data, whereas in the past we had to manually search each crash for information.

That's all for today - the rain is great for the area, unfortunately it is once again not in the watershed for Travis and Buchanan.  Looks like no water will go down to the rice farmers again this year, hopefully we will get some much needed run off this year to get the Lakes back up to reasonable levels!
