BD Party, Truck Traffic, More on C-4 Zoning and Much More!

Turns out Lakeway's Birthday Party last Saturday was a huge success!  We served about 600 hot dogs, and a rough estimate of about 1000 folks attended.  As you can see in the accompanying photo by Devon Monk, the dunk tank was a huge success!  We'll put in more water 50 years from now at the next party!

It was a packed house for the Barn Dance and BBQ that evening, the food was GREAT and the band kept things jumping!  We got to meet some of the original residents of Lakeway and everyone seemed to have a great time.  Don't forget the Golden Anniversary Gala at the Lakeway Inn on November 8, 2013 - space is still available - pick up your reservation form at the City Hall!

Mayor DeOme had an article in the paper this week about the functions of our local municipal court - here is a link to the full article!

Judge Madison has been busy too.  Here is a link to a Power Point he developed on Designer Drugs - check it out!

There will be heavy truck traffic on Highland Blvd. beginning Oct. 14th between 9:00AM and 3:00PM moving spoils from one section to another for about 2 weeks.  Here is a map of the location.

Nore GREAT news!  Lakeway earned a Aa1 bond rating from Moody's this week - this puts us in an elite upper echelon of local governments that have that rating.  Here is a link to the full story.  This enables us to get the best rates on bonds if we borrow money for projects - this will include Flint Rock Road!

The City is moving forward with the C-4 zoning ordinance - you probably have heard snippets of information floating around.  Here is an overview of the possible ordinance.  Please read this or the full ordinance before you form an opinion.  This in fact would apply to any auto sales / service facility but there are extreme limitations - not only to locations (at least 2 miles apart and minimum of 20 acres) but also to impervious cover (40%).  If this zoning ordinance passes, then there will be at least 2 hearings before it is applied to any property - both ZAPCO and Council.

From Steve Jones:
This morning, Moody’s Investor Services informed us that our bond rating has been upgraded from Aa2 to Aa1.  Even though that is only a one-step increase, it is quite an achievement for a city of our size.  To put it into perspective, Moody’s ranks about 875 cities nationwide as Aa2 while only about 250 make it to Aa1.  The next step up is Aaa, and that rating is almost exclusively given to large cities.  Only 5.6% of all cities rated by Moody’s receive Aaa and Aa1 ratings.  The median rating for cities nationwide is Aa3.  The new rating will help decrease the interest rates on new bond issues or refinancing outstanding debt.  It is also a good reflection on how well Lakeway is governed.

Mayor DeOme and I toured the plant where the city’s recycled material is processed.  It is an impressive operation and one of the largest such facilities in the country.  We were shown how the comingled material is separated by both machines and humans before it is pressed into large bales and shipped to mills and manufacturing plants where it is reused as raw material for various products.  The plant processes about 25 tons of waste material per day that otherwise would be disposed of in a landfill.

Dale DeLong reports, “We are in the process of trimming trees throughout the city that are obstructing street signs or intersections.  We are also removing old concrete spills on Delsie Dr. and Dragon St.  It looks like they will have to be cut out and patched with new asphalt.  Unfortunately the Nuphar in the pond of the 1800 block of Lakeway Boulevard is slowly making a comeback, so we had it sprayed again last Saturday.”

Chief Radford Reports:
Detective Proctor recovered stolen jewelry totaling $9,729 from a pawnshop.  The jewelry was reported stolen by a resident, claiming that a guest of his had taken the items.  An arrest warrant will be obtained next week for the suspect.

LPD and LTFR are negotiating an agreement to conduct background investigations for their fire fighter applicants.  This has been an issue in the past for LTFR, and they would like our assistance.

Officer Gavit has been reassigned to cover the detective’s position vacated by the retirement of Detective Davis.  Once other patrol vacancies are filled and a new detective is promoted, Gavit will become the agency training officer, range master, alarm coordinator, extra job coordinator, and internal affairs investigator.  He will also augment patrol when there is a need.

The City of Lakeway and LPD received our second police narcotics dog from APD on Monday.  Orka is her name.  She is a six-year-old German Shepard and a veteran in the interdiction of narcotics on the streets of Austin.  We are excited about Orka and look forward to seeing how she does here in Lakeway.  Officer Wendy Kanzenbach is her handler.  Wendy just relocated to Lakeway from Killeen.

LPD Community Liaison Officer Eric Barto continues to prepare for our Halloween event at LRMC on October 25-27.  This is a three-night event where LPD officers, citizens police academy alumni, and LRMC staff will have a haunted maze set up in the basement of the LRMC parking structure.  The first two nights are just for people to go through the haunted maze.  The final day (Sunday, October 27) will feature a special evening for families and little kids with a costume contest, trick or treat, games, and more.

And finally - the Central Texas Water Coalition's Save Lake Travis Fundraising Party,  is back on - Sunday October 20, 2013 at the Shades Outdoor Music Stage at Sail and Ski Yacht Club, 16406 Stewart Rd., Lakeway.

That's all for right now - more as I find out!
