Budget Work Session, ZAPCO, Level IV Trauma at BSW and More!

It's Saturday morning, it's 59° with a clear sky, the Cav's won last night against Steele 34-31 and most of you live in Lakeway - what more could you want?  It's a great day!

Monday we will have a budget work session and public hearing on the 2018 city budget at 6:30 p.m.  Here is the agenda.

ZAPCO met in regular session Wednesday evening.  Here was that agenda.
Item 5 was a sign alteration that was approved.
Item 6 was a special use permit for an O'Reilly Auto Parts at 219 RR 620 that was recommended contingent on a variance approval by council.
Item 7 pulled to be heard by the Board of Adjustment since it is a zoning variance.
Item 8 was a request for a SUP to allow an independent and assisted living facility located at the Northeast corner of Hwy 71 and Bee Creek Road.  It was approved.
Items 9 and 10 were requests for renewal of SUP for Short Term Rentals - there were no violations reported and both were recommended for approval to council.
Items 11, 12, 13 were plats and zoning requests that have to do with the property the new police station will be located on.  All were passed unanimously.
Item 14 was request for a PUD amendment to the Tuscan Village Planned Use Development (PUD) - there was a lot of discussion and it was finally recommended to council.

We are planning a work session before the next council meeting to hear a proposal from Stratus Corp. for development of their property behind HEB.  This will be on September 18th at 5:30 directly preceding the 6:30 council meeting.

CBC will meet in regular session next Thursday September 14 at 9:00 a.m.  Here is that agenda.  Looks like a fairly short agenda.

BDS is continuing to stay busy - here is the report from last week. Several large projects are permitted and will be under construction soon including a La Quinta Inn and Suites behind High 5.  Here is Mr. Miller's report.

I attended a meeting at Lakeway Baylor Scott and White Friday and learned some great stuff.  First and foremost, they now have a Level IV Trauma certification!  This means we have a facility available that is closer and quicker to get to.  They also have a NICU that can handle critical care infants and new born issues.  They also have new expertise and imaging available for stroke and brain issues.

The hospital is also holding an educational seminar on "Epilepsy: Diagnosis and Management" on Thursday, September 28 at 6 p.m.  Here is a link to more info

I am going to start the "Back the Blue" campaign soon.  If you have blue lights put them back in, if not, the city will have new LED bulbs for purchase at a nominal cost at the city hall.  They should come in at the end of next week - both standard bulbs and candelabra base.  Both will be true LED and the color should be perfect.  I will let you know as soon as they are available!  Let's support our police!

Speaking of the Police, a group of volunteers collected and hauled a trailer load of supplies to police officers in coastal areas that were affected by hurricane Harvey - hats off to them!

National Night Out is coming up on October 3rd.  If you want to have a neighborhood party and invite the police to come by, call dispatch and let them know you're interested.

From the Chief:
LPD Officers conducted 113 traffic stops, responded to 13 alarm calls, responded to 16 animal calls, responded to 15 collisions, answered 16 suspicious circumstances calls and handled 111 other types of calls for service for a total of 284.

Routine traffic stops resulted in the following charges; Out of Jurisdiction Warrants X 1, Driving while Intoxicated X 1, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia X 1.

Officers responded to a Champions Drive address in reference to a suspicious person call. Officers learned that a homeowner was awakened by their home security system which was recording a person outside of the residence. The homeowner was able to provide video of a male subject wearing a ski mask and gloves who was on the front porch of her home. The prowler left the scene and a search of the area did not turn up a suspect. CID continues to look into this case.

Officers responded to a Cutty Trail address in reference to a disturbance call. Subjects at the residence had been involved in an argument. Officers stood by while one of the persons loaded their belongings into their vehicle. The subject then left the residence to spend the night in a hotel. No charges were filed in this case.

Officers responded to an Otter Creek address in reference to a disturbance call. Upon arrival officers learned that an argument between spouses had become physical. After the investigation it was determined that one subject was the aggressor. This subject was placed under arrest for assault family violence. The subject was transported to the Travis County Jail.

A great moment this week! Employees of the Lakeway Police Department representing the Lakeway Police Officer’s Association teamed with our representative with the Texas Municipal Police Association to take donations and supplies to those public servants affected by Hurricane Harvey.

The following are the individuals who volunteered for this mission: Officer Joshua Love- Patrol Division, Officer Jeremy Garza- Patrol Division, Detective Steve Howell- Criminal Investigations Division, Telecommunications Supervisor Mike Olsen- Communications Division, Telecommunicator Shawn Blanchette- Communications Division, Noel Johnson- Reserve Officer and TMPA Representative.

These employees left Lakeway on Sunday the 3rd and returned safely to Lakeway late on September 4th after making these important deliveries. These are the locations that they stopped and gave supplies and support to Sour Lake Police Department, Lumberton Police Department, Kountze Volunteer Fire Department, Vidor Police Department, Vidor ISD Police Department, Groves Police Department, Port Neches Police Department.

We are very thankful to the donations supplied to us by the Lakeway community to take to our friends in “blue” in the gulf coast area. As police chief, I am very proud our agency was able to contribute in a meaningful way during this time of need.
