The city will make every effort to keep streets open, currently the biggest concern is tree damage from any significant winds. The Wildfire Mitigation group is also on standby in case they are needed to clear debris from roads. If the rain picks up as predicted, it is possible that Lakeway Dr. (just North of Lakeway Blvd.) and Lakeway Blvd. (at Hurst Creek) could be closed if the water floods across the road. Turn around, don't drown!
If you have interest in helping, go to the Central Texas Red Cross site for more information. I'm told they are holding classes today for folks interested in helping at the shelters - you will need to attend an hour class. http://www.redcross.org/local/texas/central-and-south-texas
We will be watching Flint Rock Road but flooding should not be a problem anymore. We expect some erosion in drainage areas because the grass did not have time to fill in. Palos Verdes at Flint Rock has had an issue because the elevation of the drain was too high and water is ponding. The engineer and contractor are working on a solution that should be implemented soon.
Stephanie Samuels from Lowes Home Improvement has checked in with me to let me know they are well stocked with emergency supplies so if you need something they are open and available!
Another big event this week - we received the Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) from SpawGlass for the new police station. It is right on budget and will be presented to Council at our next meeting so we can accept it formally. This means the price can not go over the contracted price but can be lower if bids are better than expected.
An article came out in the View and Statesman this week about an alleged ethics violation in regarding the Board of Adjustment. Although the reporter did a good job of stating half the facts, she seemed to have left out some important information. Let me fill in some of the blanks. Although there were some technical issues including a video that would not display properly and a link that didn't work in the members packets, the Chairman, Bill Dickson, offered to postpone the meeting in order to allow this information to be properly communicated to the board. The complainant via their representative chose to continue the meeting without that data. City staff also verified the complainants were aware they had 10 days to appeal the decision and their representative verified they knew about this option. They chose not to appeal. These points were missing completely from the article. This seems to have been a trend over the past few months with only half of the story being reported.
BDS was busy last week - here is Director Ray Miller's report.
Steve Jones met with Searcy Willis and Todd Buikema about our local blood drives. They need an official sponsor and the city could be that sponsor. The blood drives highlight the good in Lakeway and it would be good to help them continue with their GREAT work.
Our website has a new look - hopefully an easier method of accessing city and area information. https://www.lakeway-tx.gov/
