Another busy week at the City! After the storm Sunday morning, both the citizens and city were cleaning up. Some areas were hit harder than others - it seems the greatest areas of damage were along the lakefront - not much to stop the winds coming across the lake. The Lakeway Resort has some significant damage along with areas around the Robin Dale area. Public Works crews were called in after Sunday’s storm to remove trees that were blocking the roadway at the following locations: 400 block of Rolling Green, 300 block of Explorer, Bermuda Drive, 2500 block of Lakeway Blvd, Electra, and Corinthian. Work continued throughout the week removing several broken limbs that were in danger of falling into the roadway.
Steve Jones and I met with Commissioner Daugherty at the County Offices Monday morning to work on the plans for the Sports Park area off Bee Creek road. Their planners are working on a layout that we will compare with our intentions - should be available for us in a few weeks. Once we agree on the plan and legal documentation we hope it will be added to the county bond election in November. More on this as it goes forward.
ZAPCO met in regular session Wednesday - here is that agenda. Item 7 was the final plat of Lakeway Estates - this is a large lot partially gated area off Serene Hills - it was recomended unanimously to City Council.
Item 8 was a revision of the Lakeway Medical Village PUD that allows a medical office building there - it fits with the intent of the plan for the hospital area.
Item 9 was a variance for a project on Whippoorwill street that pertains to driveway standards. ZAPCO approved the request but the Fire Dept. will have to permit it also - I'm not sure that will happen because of access issues for trucks.
Item 10 was re-authorization of an SUP for a warehouse facility that was previously approved - passed unanimously.
Item 11, 12 and 13 were plat approval, annexation and zoning for areas in the Highlands - all approved.
Thursday we hosted a TEEX All Hazards Workshop for senior area officials. We worked on plans with area cities and county officials, Baylor Scott and White, Lake Travis Fire and Rescue, Travis County PUA, LTISD, The Village of the Hills, Lakeway MUD and Water District 17 and volunteer groups so we will be prepared in case of a serious event in the Lakeway area. We ended the day with a table top exercise where a tornado took out the High School, part of the Hospital, the City Hall and Police Station. It was an interesting afternoon and we learned a lot about our strengths and weaknesses. It was very beneficial to all of the attendees and I look forward on following up on improved plans. Hopefully we will never need to use the Emergency Plan - but we need to be as ready as possible if we have an event!
We are still trying to convince our legislative representatives that they need to listen to voters and what they want - we carry a large voting block and I for one think they need to listen. I spent much of the day Wednesday getting letters written with out ordinances attached on Short Term Rentals. We will continue the battle to be sure we are heard.
We held another informational Town Hall meeting Thursday evening on the proposed police station and the bond that is on the ballot in May. There is a lot of incorrect information out there by folks that don't have the facts - take the time to come to the last meeting on Thursday April 20th at the Activity Center. We got some good questions yesterday and a very positive response from the crowd. Please come and make an informed decision in May!
Next Thursday come to "Candidates Night" at the Activity Center - it starts at 7PM and I expect all candidates will be there to take questions.
Municipal Court reports that they received 334 violations last month: 242 Traffic, 42 City Ordinance, 50 State Law, and 0 Parking violations.
HR reports that we have job postings for Police Officer, Police Telecommunicator, Purchasing Coordinator, Senior Court Clerk, Building Inspector, and various seasonal summer jobs at the Swim Center.
Don't forget our annual Easter Celebration - Eggstravaganza at the City Park on Saturday April 8 at City Park - it's great fun especially for the kiddos! Here's a link to more info!

The Lakeway Citizen’s Police Academy met for week seven on Wednesday night. This week’s speaker was Chief Todd Radford. As always his instruction on use of force and officer wellness was very well received.
Chief Radford provided testimony at the Capitol this week in front of the House Public Health committee regarding police officer mental health and wellness. The bill, would allow for funding for Texas police department to receive money with the purpose of providing yearly psychiatric wellness visits for their officers. Currently Lakeway PD is the only police agency in Texas conducting this practice and is the model for this proposed legislation.
That's all for today - I hope you enjoy the upcoming beautiful weekend. If you would like to be added to my email list send a note to lakeway@bain.us and I'll get you added.
Be safe out there!
