The Lakeway City Wide Garage Sale is going on this morning - sorry for the late notice! Here's more information.
City Building Commission (CBC) will meet on Thursday April 27. Here is the agenda of that meeting.
Early voting begins Monday April 24 - here is a link to more information. There is a lot of back and forth going on via social media - take your time, look at the qualifications of the candidates and make a good choice. Remember, our community is looked at as very desirable because of the work and efforts of volunteers over the last 50 years. Some of the rhetoric seems to suggest we need to change that. Your vote will send a message. Let's keep Lakeway the wonderful community you came to live in. Here is a link to the Candidate Forum put on by the LCC. Remember, the first 6 questions were sent to the candidates and they had time to prepare - after that they were on their own.
Besides the Council race, two other important items are on the ballot. The $23M bond is a hot topic of conversation. I hope you have taken the time to see the Presentation done at the Activity Center or Council Chambers. Here is a link to that video.
The other item is the 1/4% sales tax for road repairs - it has to be renewed every 4 years by state statute. It does not increase the sales tax, it is part of the 8.25% that we already collect contrary to one candidates statement. If we don't renew it, it will be scooped up by some other entity and will no longer be available. The $500K per year we receive will then need to come from other tax sources within the community. Please vote yes!
Council met in regular session Monday - here was the agenda. Here is the video of the session. Although the company that does the recordings was having power issues, I think the whole session was recorded. All items were passed unanimously by council.
Here is a link to BDS Director Ray Millers report on the weeks activity.
The Board of Adjustment (BOA) met on Wednesday this week over an appeal of a view blocking determination made by the CBC. They voted to uphold the CBC ruling by a 3-1 vote. Thank you for your service volunteers!
The proposed La Quinta Hotel at the Oaks submitted their building plans for a permit this week.
Public Works has ordered flashing signs to assist pedestrian's crossing Highlands Blvd. at Tavish Trail. This area is a problem for pedestrians because of the speed of the traffic and width of the street.

Officers responded to the 2000 block of RR620 South in reference to a major collision (vehicle vs. bicyclist). The investigation revealed a motorist failed to yield right of way and struck the cyclist as the motorist attempted to turn. The cyclist was transported to Baylor Scott & White Lakeway with non-life threatening injuries.
Officers responded to Baylor Scott & White hospital in reference to what was initially reported as a possible sexual assault. The victim was a patient at the hospital and wanted to file a report against her male nurse after he conducted an invasive medical procedure. The incident was referred to the Criminal Investigations Unit for further investigation and the case remains active.
Officers responded to the 700 block of Cutlass in reference to a possible burglary of a vehicle. The victim reported that two of his vehicles were entered by an unknown suspect(s) but no property had been taken. Officers found no signs of forced entry and were unable to lift any fingerprints from the vehicles.
Officers responded to CVS in reference to a Theft that occurred. According to the store manager, a black male entered the store and stole approximately $50.00 in merchandise, then ran from the store. The manager believes the suspect is responsible for a prior theft as well. The incident was referred to the Criminal Investigations Unit for further investigation and the case remains active.
All police officers and detectives took part in the force training simulator training which is on loan from the Capital Area Council of Governments.
Detectives attended the Central Texas Fraud Investigations Task Force Meeting which was hosted by the TCDA’s White Collar Crime Task Force. The meeting was focused on efforts to improve case presentations and the sharing of current crime trends and criminal intelligence in the Central Texas area. The meeting was attended by multiple local, stated, and federal law enforcement agencies and prosecutors from Travis and Williamson Counties.
Detectives were assigned to investigate a report of an Assault with Injury (Family Violence) which occurred in the 600 block of Cutty Trail. According to the victim, she was involved in a physical altercation with her husband. Based on the physical evidence and testimony by the victim, Detectives were able to establish enough probable cause to have an arrest warrant (Assault with Injury) issued for the suspect. Due to the suspect’s prior criminal history, the charge was enhanced to a felony offense. The suspect remains at large but is expected to surrender himself to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office.
Detectives were assigned to investigate a report of Fraud which occurred in the 1000 block of Porpoise. According to the victim, an unknown subject attempted to scam him by sending a fraudulent check in an amount that was more than the agreed purchase price. The victim confirmed the check was fraudulent by taking the check to his banking institution, thus avoiding a financial loss. Due to the nature of these types of crimes, the case was closed as unsolvable.
Detectives were assigned to investigate a report of Identity Theft after a Lakeway resident discovered several credit card accounts were opened in her name. According to the victim, the case was initially reported to the Dallas Police Department. Detectives learned that Detectives with DPD identified and arrested a suspect in the case. Our case was closed as Unfounded as the crime occurred outside of our jurisdiction.
APO Greig was assigned to investigate a report of an animal attack (dog bite) which occurred in the 16000 block of Pool Canyon Cove. Once contact was made with the victim, it was determined the incident occurred outside of our jurisdiction. The case was subsequently turned over to the Travis County Animal Control for investigation.
Detectives were contacted the Travis County District Attorney’s Office who requested additional follow-up investigation be conducted in reference to a traffic stop/arrest (Identity Theft) that occurred in January. On January 29, 2017, LPD Officers conducted a traffic stop in the 900 block of RR620 South, and during a search of the vehicle, found illegal narcotics and identifying information (driver’s license, social security cards, and a debit card) which did not belong to the occupants of the vehicle. The passenger was charged with Fraudulent Use or Possession of Identifying Information. Recently, Detectives were able to track down several of the victims, conduct phone interviews, and obtained written statements. Detectives were also able to develop a possible lead in a related burglary case which was being investigated by the Austin Police Department. The information was turned over to the Travis County District Attorney’s Office who will be presenting the evidence to a Grand Jury.

Editorial:
I am very concerned with the unusual rhetoric I have seen and experienced during this election cycle. It seems city leaders are being accused of things to help the agenda of a few folks, many of which have never involved themselves in Lakeway until this election. The City has been accused of not being open, letting development run rampant and city leaders that are making backroom deals. Folks, I and the city staff along with the current council have put a lot of effort into making sure we are open and citizens have the opportunity to be involved in city decisions. I pushed to start the video recording of all council meeting (plus other meetings), I have published this blog for eight years now and continue to fight to get traffic issues corrected and improved on our area roads. Please look at our candidates, look at their work in the city and make an educated decision at the polls.
Thank you for your continued support!
