LTISD Gala, Legislature, Police Station and MORE!

Good Morning!  A little sprinkle already this morning, they say we have more to come.  I don't complain about the rain any more, after our 5 year drought I'm happy to see it anytime!

Tonight we kick into daylight savings time again - don't forget to "spring forward" an hour on your clocks or you will be late to events on Sunday.  I wish they would leave it one way or another.

LTISD had their annual Gala last Saturday - congratulations on receiving over $500,000 in donations.  None of this money is shared on the "Robin Hood" plan the state can't seem to fix.  The puppy above on the left brought $55,000.  Thanks to all the generous folks that help make our schools great!

The State Legislature seems intent on working on issues that interfere with our city business.  There are several bills that I am talking to our representatives about - one reduces the "rollback" rate from 8% to 4%.  This would restrict the city's budget process and would require an election if the budget exceeded a 4% increase.  The rollback rate is very complex and of course the State is exempt from the issue.  Lakeway prides itself on keeping our taxes low and working to make sure we get the most from our tax dollars.

Another bill would gut our short term rental ordinances, I suspect there are lobbyists that don't care if a residential hotel is next door to their citizens.

A third bill would gut our tree ordinance and affect our oak wilt program.

The recycling center will host a collection event on Wednesday March 15 at the  Lake Travis Regional Re-Use and Recycling Center from 9 a.m. until noon.  The center is located at 3207 Neidhardt Dr., just off General Williamson Drive behind Lake Travis Fire and Rescue Station 601.  Here is a link to more info

Lakeway Baylor Scott and White will be hosting a free seminar on your back and back pain on Thursday, Mar. 30, 2017 at 6 p.m.

The City has formed a Charter Review committee to go through the city charter as required.  They will be meeting over the next few months to decide if they feel like any changes are needed.  This is a project that is done every 4 years.

Hat Creek Burgers is projecting their opening in April.

The courts had a busy day Friday with two full dockets at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. with 30 or more cases on each.  Before you jump to the wrong conclusion, we only get 15% on fees collected at the courts.  Be safe and drive defensively!

There will be a city blood drive next Saturday, March 18.  Here is a link to more information.

Here's a link to information about the proposed Police Station.  It also list dates and times for informational open houses and presentations and breaks down the costs.  I should have a video shortly that will show the current facilities and why we need a new station.  Our committees have worked long and hard to be sure we designed a facility that meets the needs of Lakeway and assures it will be sufficient to meet future needs.  Please take the time to make an educated vote on this project, it is an important addition to out city facilities.

From the Chief:
LPD Officers conducted 119 traffic stops, responded to 12 alarm calls, responded to 12 animal calls, answered 21 suspicious circumstances calls, responded to 14 collisions and handled 86 other types of calls for service for a total of 264.

Routine traffic stops resulted in the following charges;  Possession of Drug Paraphernalia X 5, Possession of a Controlled Substance X 2, Driving while Intoxicated X 2, and Public Intoxication X 1.

Officers responded to a Highlander Street address in reference to a disturbance call. It was learned an argument between a male and female had occurred. Both parties had claimed to have been assaulted by the other. The parties were separated for the night and the case is being investigated by CID.

Officers located a frequent runaway subject in the parking lot of a RR 620 business. The subject was apprehended by officers after they learned of a “Directive to Apprehend” issued by juvenile detention. The subject was processed and transported to Gardner-Betts Juvenile Facility.

Officers responded to a Mariner Street address in reference to a check welfare call. Upon arrival the officer met with a neighbor that had a key for the residence. After making entry the female occupant was found unresponsive in a downstairs bedroom. After consulting with the Medical Examiner the female was pronounced dead of natural causes and the body was released to Cook/ Walden Funeral Home.

The third week of the Lakeway Citizen’s Police Academy took place on Wednesday evening. This week Police Department employees, Supervisor Mike Olsen and Tele-Communicator Deborah Brown did a presentation on the Communications/Dispatch section. Officer Gavit, Officer Deville and Captain Crowder completed the session with a presentation on crime scene investigations, which was very well received.
