Last Week Info, Council Results, Upcoming Events

Up Front - Did you ever wonder why you name isn't in the Lakeway Directory?  There's a reason for that!  You have to request to be in it!  It's a GREAT resource to find friends and neighbors. Lakeway Residents Directory - Residents Section Updates for 2015 Edition

One of the many civic monetary contributions benefiting the residents of the City of Lakeway, The Lakeway Civic Corporation (LCC) generates, prints and distributes the Lakeway Residents Directory.  Being included is By Request Only by the resident.  August 14, 2014 is the deadline to add new entries for the 2015 directory or to make changes to current information.  Please contact LCC@Lakeway.org or 512-261-5203.

From Steve Jones:
Public Works said that after 35 roll-off dumpsters and 1 month after the “big storm” all the brush debris at the public works department will be cleaned up.  That brings the total amount of brush up to 1,400 cubic yards.  We conducted the bid opening for this year’s street overlay today.  The low bidder is Lone Star Paving Company at $358K.  Dale DeLong is working with Judge Madison on new flashing school crossing signs at Lakeway Elementary.  The flashing signs are new for Lakeway and are intended to provide additional safety for elementary school children who walk cross Lohmans Crossing.

We have advertised the opening and begun receiving applications to fill the City Secretary position.  It will be difficult to find experienced candidates for this position, so we are prepared for the hiring process to take several months.

From the Chief:
Officers responded to 509 RR620 South (Cavalier Food Mart) in reference to an attempted fraud in progress.  The responding officer made contact with the suspect who then attempted to flee in his vehicle.  The officer and the suspect became involved in a physical altercation that resulted in injuries to the officer and the suspect.  The suspect and the officer were treated for injuries at LRMC and released a short time later.  The suspect was transported to central booking and charged with Assault on a Public Servant and Theft by Check.

Our traffic team conducted a selective traffic enforcement initiative targeting violators of the posted “No left turn” in 2400 blk RR620 South (Wendy’s parking lot).  In a 2-hour period, officers stopped six violators, issued four summons, and two warnings.  Additionally the K-9 was deployed twice, but no narcotics were discovered.

Officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 1700 block of Lakeway Blvd.  During the course of the stop, a K9 was deployed to conduct an open-air sniff.  The K9 alerted on the vehicle at which time a search was conducted.  Officers found marijuana and hash oil on the passenger.  He was subsequently charged with Possession of Marijuana and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Detective Proctor attended a case review with the DA’s office in reference to an injury to a child case.  Detective Proctor also delivered a Medical Records Subpoenas to Dell Children’s Hospital for records needed for prosecution of a juvenile case.

A subject was arrested for Assault with Injury, because of a family violence case that was investigated by our detectives.

A conditional offer of employment for the position of police officer was extended to Antonio Rojas.  Pending his successful completion of the firearms qualifications, medical physical, and drug screen and psychological review portions of the hiring process, we expect Mr. Rojas to accept our offer and join our team within the next week or two.

Ruth Sandoval reports that we cleared 166 warrants worth $52,153 ($25,358 actual collections, $5,685 Cash bond, and $21,109 as non-cash/granted jail timed credit by judge).

The contractor on Bee Creek Road estimates that portions of the new road will be open for cars on August 11, prior to school starting.  While not all lanes will be ready, driving condition will be much improved.

For the first time in years, we received good news from our health insurance carrier.  The city’s experience ratio has been consistently lower this year, and we do not expect an appreciable increase in rates for next year.

We met with our engineer on the park improvement projects this week to discuss moving forward with a plan.  After preliminary engineering and cost estimates, the price of four projects was substantially higher than we expected.  In response, we decided to cut back to two projects, the Hamilton Greenbelt restroom and parking lot, and the Canyonlands restroom.  Together, the two projects will cost close to $500,000.  The engineer will move forward with design plans in preparation for bidding.  We plan to bring the projects to the council for approval for bidding when the plans are complete.

Plans for the Rolling Green and Cold Water culvert project are about 60% complete.  They will be submitted for city review and permitting in the next two months.  After permits are approved, we will bid out the project and bring the bids to council for award.

Council met in regular session Monday evening - here are those results.
5.  Passed unanimously to hire Specialized Public Finance to handle financial issues such as Bond Elections - we are looking forward to working with them on several looming projects.
6.  SUP (Special Use Permit) passed unanimously to allow a drive through for a bank to be located near 620 in the Hospital District.  There was a condition that a service road had to be completed before a Certificate of Occupancy would be issued.
