City News - Blood Drive, Council, Police Blotter!

Good Afternoon!  Friday's here already!  Let's see what's going on in Lakeway.

The Lakeway Community Blood Drive is happening Saturday January 18th at the Activity Center from 8-12!  This is a GREAT event and helps scores of people - please call Searcy Willis at 512-261-9055 for an appointment!

Council will meet in regular session on TUESDAY - Monday is Martin Luther King Day and the City offices will be closed.  Here is that agenda.  As reported Wednesday, the Stratus development is on the agenda for a PUD, the Lexus dealership zoning and plans will be acted on, a Final Plat for the Lakeway Medical Village to help with their development will be looked at, a Special Use Permit for Sun Auto Service,  a pedestrian trail improvement project will be considered and an update to the 2010 Annexation Study will be presented along with areas in the ETJ recommended for annexation.

CBC will meet in regular session on Thursday - here is that agenda.

Wednesday I reported that the hospital behind the Post Office was purchased by Vibra Healthcare - it was actually leased, not purchased.

You might receive a survey via email from the Lakeway Visitors Commission - here is a link to more information.

From Steve Jones:
The Deer Management Committee has had a very productive year.  So far, we have trapped 122 deer.  That is about the amount we trapped for the entire season last year.  We expect to trap about 35 more animals before stopping for the year.  We believe the high number is due to weather conditions, but we do not know for sure.

There was a water main break in the Village of the Hills over the past weekend requiring an emergency boil-water notice to be issued. At the direction of our emergency manager Captain David Crowder, Sergeant Brinkman responded to the Police Department after hours on Friday evening to meet with The Hills Emergency Management Coordinator, Terry Browder, and a reverse 911 activation was initiated. The reverse 911 system was activated again on Tuesday afternoon to rescind the boil-water notice.

The Board of Ethics met this week to hear a request from Judge Madison for a board opinion.  Judge Madison wanted to be sure that soliciting for contributions to construct a lighted crosswalk on Lohmans Crossing for Lakeway Elementary School is allowed under the code of ethics.  The board’ official opinion is that such solicitation is allowed by the code.

Mayor DeOme spoke this week at the Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce’s semiannual economic forecast.  He spoke about city finances, residential and commercial development, water issues, and transportation issues.

Sharon Cole reported that, “New employee orientation and enrollment paperwork was completed on January 6 for our two new building inspectors.  Bryan Bell moved from reserve officer status to full time Officer I, also on January 6.  Five interviews were held for the Admin III, assistant to City Manager and Mayor.  A second interview is scheduled for January 21 for one applicant.  On January 13, orientation and enrollment paperwork was completed for the Dispatch Supervisor position, hiring Jennifer Menoskey.   Interviews are also scheduled for January 21 and January 23 for the new City Marshal opening.  And, preparations for swim center summer employees are underway.”

From the PD:
LPD Officers stopped six trucks for violating the city truck ordinance during the week.

LPD Officers made drug seizures and arrests during three separate traffic stops this week.

Three separate cases were reported this week related to identity theft. The cases do not appear to be related to a single point of purchase or similar situation. It can never be emphasized enough, the importance of trying to protect your identity from being stolen. However, if you do discover you are the victim of identity theft, contact your financial institutions immediately and then file a report with law enforcement.

LPD officers assisted DPS with a felony warrant arrest of an individual who resided on Lakeway Drive for drug related offenses.

Our new dispatch supervisor started with us this week. We welcome Jennifer Menoskey to our LPD team. She has over twenty years of telecommunicator experience and we look forward to her insight into improving our already stellar dispatch center and staff.

Along with LPD patrol officers, Detective Mary Proctor and Crime Scene Technician Edgar Smith responded to a deceased person call on Monday. A middle-aged female passed away alone in her residence and was discovered by a housekeeper. Foul play is not suspected at this time, but the death is under investigation.

Crime Scene/Evidence Tech Edgar Smith has begun working on the annual property room audit that requires 100% review of all drugs, guns and currency. This process must be completed by mid-February to comply with our best practices program. Additionally a full audit of all vehicle pursuits and any use of force incidents will be conducted and reports generated in the near future.

Captain Crowder completed and returned the annual Juvenile report to the state.  We have had exceptional compliance reports for the past several years.
Detective Proctor cleared a case by arrest that involved a trespasser at Lakeway Regional Medical Center. A male subject has been seen on LRMC property entering the trash dumpsters, photographing, and sorting the trash. When officers encountered the subject over the summer, he admitted to having what he described as a “trash fetish.” At that time, he was advised by LRMC staff to not return to the premises, and was issued a criminal trespass warning. Hospital staff found the same individual in a dumpster in December, but the subject left prior to officers arrival. Detective Proctor was able to obtain an arrest warrant based on vehicle description and witness statements.

From Dale DeLong:
This week we started adding granite gravel to the west Lakeway Blvd trail in order to bring it back up to grade or above grade. Years of erosion have caused the trail to become a river channel during rain events. We will also install some culverts under the trail in a couple of the more troubled areas to help prevent the water from crossing over. We expect the work to be completed by the end of next week.

In addition to the re-striping that took place on Hurst Creek Rd, raised pavement markings were installed this week to complete the project.

A request for bids was advertised last Thursday for the milling and replacement of asphalt in the damaged sections of the 1400 Block of Lakeway Drive and the 3100 Block of Lakeway Blvd.
=============
