Big things first!
Be careful on Lakeway Blvd.! The area where the road passes over Hurst Creek (just West of the intersection of Lakeway Dr.) has eroded and a severe dip has formed mostly on the West bound lanes. This has happened quickly over the past 3 days and engineers are working on a solution. It appears the original culverts (4 8-footers) were steel instead of concrete and have become unstable. Current thought is to completely rebuild the area which would entail replacing the steel culverts with concrete ones. Doing this while using the area for traffic will make for an interesting project! The Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is TODAY from 10AM until 2:00 PM at the Lakeway Justice Center. Get those old prescriptions (you were supposed to finish but didn't) and turn them in - it keeps them out of our sewer system and disposes of them.
If you haven't seen the Sing Along Spring Show you have one more chance! There are still a few tickets left - call the Activity Center, 261-1010. It's a GREAT show!
Welcome Devin Monk, current editor of Lake Travis View to the City Staff. He has accepted the position of Communications Coordinator. This will be an interesting change for Devin, instead of trying to get information from the City he will be working for us. I look forward to working with him on the other side of the fence!
The Parks and Rec. Department has once again been very busy! Here is Andra's report for your viewing pleasure - thanks again Andra!
From Steve Jones:
The Lakeway Police responded to a request by LTISD regarding a non-specific threat at the High School. Some of our officers along with the Travis County Sheriff's Dept. assisted in keeping our schools safe.
The Police also made a felony arrest this week when the subject violently assaulted his sister which resulted in an injury.
The second phase of our Safer Schools Initiative was implemented. Each uniformed officer will drive through the parking areas and walk through the facility of every school in our city while on duty. The staff and parents are very pleased, with many calls and emails in support. [The program has been so well received that the school district has requested that we do this at the middle school and high school as well.]
Friday was the deadline for companies to submit their proposals for the Lakeway Visitors Commission “branding” project. At last count, we had twenty submissions, an unexpectedly high number. A committee of LVC members and city staff will begin evaluating the proposals next week.
I recently learned that the Capital Area Council of Governments does not plan to budget for the continuation of our 9-1-1 PSAP next fiscal year. Our average monthly number of 9-1-1 calls is below their cutoff limit for funding. It appears that if we desire to retain our primary service answering point, the city will have to include it in next year’s budget. The estimated cost will be $32K for fiscal year 2014.
We still have not installed the signs to prohibit trucks on Lakeway Boulevard. So far, TxDOT has been resistant to allowing the necessary signs on RM 620. We are ready to install the signs and begin enforcement as soon as we get cooperation from TxDOT.
