Police Station, Emergency Drill, Veterans Day and Much More!

Here I am on Sunday morning - behind and trying to catch up.  As for weather, not a lot of rain yet, about .06 inch yesterday at the 15th Tee on Live Oak, but they did get some West of us and Lake Buchanan came up a little.

Monday was a flurry of activity at City Hall trying to get things ready for Council next Monday.  Here is the agenda.  It's going to be a busy meeting!

Steve Jones, Mayor Pro Tem Jim Powell, Chief Todd Radford and I attended a class on "Planning, Designing and Constructing Police Facilities" in Dallas through Friday.  A new Justice Center is a big project and all of us want to do what's best for Lakeway and it's citizens and we want to be sure the Police and Courts have the facilities they need to keep Lakeway safe.  We spent 3 days learning from presentations and touring area facilities.  Lots of good information and it was a real learning experience for me as well as the others.

Tuesday area Hospitals had an emergency drill to practice preparedness for major incidents.  Both LRMC and Vibra were included in the drill and the Lakeway Police threw in an "Active Shooter" drill to round things out.  I stopped by Vibra and spoke with Deborah Hopps, CEO outside at the temporary mobile communications station manned by Amateur Radio Volunteers.  Thanks to Joe Canfield N5HPC for working the radios and Joe Kornowski for the picture!  Here is the press release from LTRMC.

Unfortunately, I missed the Veterans Day Observance at the Lake Travis High School.  The Lake Travis Standing Military Committee, LTISD, Heritage Commission and the Lohmann;s Ford Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution did a GREAT job of putting this event together.  Major General Rod Kelly, USAF Ret, opened the program, Lakeway Police Color Guard presented the colors and LTISD Band and Choir entertained with a Military Medley and Service Flags.

Fred Burton - Vice President for Intelligence - Stratfor - Global Intelligence spoke - you have probably seen him in the last couple of days on interviews about the horrific acts in Paris.

Council Member Ron Massa presented documentation to the folks that had their names added to the Heritage Center "Spirit of Freedom" monument.  Our community is blessed with many citizens that have given of themselves to protect our country and freedom.  Thank You!

Judge Kevin Madison received recognition for his contributions helping Texas Municipal Courts Education Center provide faculty and programs to all municipal Judges and Court Personnel across Texas - Thanks Judge!

Saturday morning Girl Scout Troop 809 volunteered to beautify the outdoor break area at the Police Station with flowers and plants in memory of Sharon Brashear.  Sharon is the late president of the Lakeway Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and was instrumental in helping that association continue their good work.  The Association is also ordering a new table that will further improve the area.  Front row Jessica Gillman, Hannah Ho, Anna Sentmanat, Alyssa Curry. Annie Reckart.  Back row Mayor Joe Bain, Jenna Sedovic, Jillian Wise, Julia Hathaway, Smirti Rai and Police Chief Todd Radford.  Thanks to both of these organizations for volunteering in our community!  Thanks to Devin Monk for the great picture!

The Lakeway Arts Committee chairman Fred Newton has finalized the Brown Bag Luncheon Schedule for the upcoming year - here is a link to that schedule.  Also the next Big Band Bash will be coming up December 14 from 8-10 at the Activity Center - put it on the calendar!

The City will be hosting an educational seminar on Managing Whitetail Deer in Urban environments on November 18 at 6PM in Council Chambers.  This will be an educational event and will be streamed live.  There has been much discussion on social media about trapping in the Lakeway area where many facts have been distorted.  The City Deer Management process is licensed by Texas Parks and Wildlife and is recognized as one of the 2 cities in Texas with a process suggested by TP&W as the RIGHT way to manage the deer population.  Here's a link to more information.

Thanks for the continued support!  Send an email to lakeway@bain.us if you would like to be added to my email list!  Be safe in the wet weather!
